If you’ve ever had a look around the spice aisle in your local supermarket, you’ll know that turmeric is the one of the mainstays of the Indian spice selection. But did you know that it had some pretty fantastic health benefits?
Turmeric is a the root of a plant part of the ginger family and it contains a compound called curcumin (nothing to do with cumin) which has lots of health benefits for you – here’s three reasons why eating more turmeric can be good for you:
- Brain power
According to research turmeric has links to helping birth new brain cells, which can help with learning and memory. So maybe a curry is what’s needed before you take that next exam?
Research undertaken in Thailand in 2012 found that a daily dose of curcumin helped in lowering the risk of getting type 2 diabetes. Sounds like a good excuse for a daily curry!
- Heart attacks
The same 2012 study also found that turmeric can have an effect in helping to prevent heart disease. Curcumin naturally helps to stop inflammation, which is one of the causes of the development of heart disease.
